Saint-Valery-sur-Somme Enjoys an elevated postion above the Somme Bay. Spread over an Upper and Lower Town. William the Conqueror stopped at St-Valery before completing the final leg of his journey to invade England in 1066.The Upper Town retains remnants of ancient fortifications as well as the distinctive church (Eglise St-Martin) with its chequered flint and sandstone walls. Saint-Valery-Sur-Somme was used as the location during the making of "Monsignor Renard" starring John Thaw. The Lower Town includes the main shopping street, port area and the Tourist Office. The Musée Picarvie is dedicated to rural life and includes a farm, Blacksmith and Cooper from before Industrialisation. The Chemin de Fer de la Baie de Somme stops in the Lower Port . The train uses steam and diesel locomotives to ferry passengers between its base at Le Crotoy and St-Valery-en-Caux. Trains run a distance of 16 kilometres through the Somme Bay. |
