The centre of St-Omer has much to commend it. Notre Dame Cathedral started in the 13th century and opened in 1559 beautiful Gothic architecture is some of the best in the Pas de Calais. Notre Dame's astrological clock was made in 1558 and continues to work with its original mechanism!
Stroll through the well preserved old sections of the town and look out
for 17th century mansions in Rue Gambetta. The Musée Henri-Dupois
has natural history displays and an example of an old Flemish kitchen.
The Musée de l'Hotel Sandelin has displays of paintings,
sculptures, furniture etc.Call at the Tourist Office for further information on the town and boat ("bacove") trips on the Marais Audomarois. This area was once a great marsh that has been drained by 160 km of canals known as "watergangs". The land in between the green canals and lakes is used for market gardening, growing cauliflower's being a speciality. The Marais Audomarois is now a nature reserve and is home to a variety of waterfowl from coots to swans.
