Montreuil
The fortified town of Montreuil overlooks the Canche Valley which used to be occupied by the sea, hence the 'Sur-Mer' suffix. It was once an important port. It is also famous as being the setting for Victor Hugo's 'Les Miserables'. Every year a festival stages the play in the town.
Napoleon spent some time at Montreuil during the Boulogne Camp. General Haig set up his Headquarters in a chateau just outside the town in 1916.
General Haig

The town has a Citadelle and extensive ramparts. The Citadelle has been developed over the centuries, with Vauban being the last major influence.
A good starting point for a tour of the town is the Office de Tourisme .The town ramparts are best appreciated by taking one of the walks around the town walls. One takes you at rooftop level around the town. The views of the town and surrounding country reward your amply reward your efforts.
