Calais ¦Dunkerque¦ Cassel¦ St Omer¦ Le Touquet¦ Lille¦ Arras¦ Boulogne¦ Abbeville ¦ Douai ¦ Montreuil ¦ Ieper¦ Lens¦ Cambrai "Roubaix's Art Deco Swimming Pool was falling into decay until it was refurbished as a Museum of Art and Industry" Lille Excursions Lille has a number of interesting towns making up its suburbs. Nearly all have ornate Hôtel de Villes (Town Halls). The VAL Metro, trams and buses connect to these towns. If travelling by car access is made relatively easy by Lille's comprehensive road network. Beware, concentration is required when travelling by car to ensure that you follow the road signs and come off at the correct exit. ![]() Shopping While Lille Centre offers Euralille, Vieux Lille, the shopping streets of Rue Neuve and Rue de Bethune, leaving for the outskirts has more to offer the keen shopper. Prices will tend to be significantly cheaper especially in the Hypermarkets. The Centre Commercial at Englos, North West of Lille hosts one of the largest Auchan Hypermarket in France.. It is surrounded by other stores, restaurants, clothes, DIY and motor centres. An ETAP and Formule 1 Hotel are close by as well as a Novotel on the other side of the A25 Autoroute. This hotel has some extremely good prices on Weekend Breaks (from 40 per room sleeping up to a family of 4 if booked online). Other locations with big hypermarkets include Villeneuve d'Ascq with its large shopping mall, St Philibert, Ronq and Hem. |
MacArthur Glen Outlet
Village, Roubaix ![]() L'Usine L'Usine is a short bus ride from the MacArthur Glen Outlet Village. This is a converted factory which now houses another Outlet Shopping Centre. Designer label shops here include Naf Naf, Levis and Petit Bateau. Other sights Roubaix While in Roubaix find some time to visit the Hôtel de Ville and the memorial to the Resistance. The Metro Station is also a good example of 21st Century design. Roubaix's Art Deco Swimming Pool was falling into decay until it was refurbished as a Museum of Art and Industry. Lille was world renowned as a centre for the textile industry. These traditions are carried forward today by the likes of La Redoute who operate from the city. The Museum displays many preserved examples of textiles as well as sculptures and other exhibits stored for protection at the start of the Second World War. Tourcoing Another Tram destination. Tourcoing has a stylish SNCF rail Station. Opera is staged at the Théatre Municipal. Villeneuve d'Ascq If Roubaix and Tourcoing are examples of old Lille then Villeneuve d'Ascq is its modern face. A large scientific community is based around here with a thriving University campus. The main attraction for the visitor is the Musée d'Art Moderne (Modern Art Museum). |
