Centre Historique Minier de Lewarde
Delloye Colliery closed in 1971, it is now home to the largest mining museum in France. The tour of the mine starts in the pithead baths. My French was not good enough to understand all the Guide was saying, but I managed to build up a good picture from my own mining experience. An English commentary was provided by a recording and headphones. The ex-miner guide did relate a lot of his personal experiences in the mines. He was explaining how miners washed each others backs on the surface and watched each others backs while underground. ![]() The tour of the mine includes a trip in a manriding train but it does not go through any mining galleries. This would have given the impression of speed that would be obtained underground. A quick tour of the pithead explaining how the mine cars were handled leads to a simulated ride down No 2 shaft. The cage delivers visitors to an extensive set of galleries showing shaftsinking, tunnels and coal faces throughout history. The galleries are very realistic and even though they are on the surface my youngest son suffered from a bout of claustrophobia. The surface buildings display a range of coal face equipment and machinery from the past and present. There are exhibitions highlighting the perils faced by the miners which ranged from explosions to pneumoconiosis. Centre Food and fuel Tourist Information See Main Lens or Douai Pages. |
