Giverny and Vernon
Mention Giverny to an artist and they will tell you it was the home of Claude Monet between 1883 and his death in 1926. Monet is considered to be the original Impressionist after his painting "Impressions of Sunrise". His home was donated to the Académie des Beaux-Arts in 1966 by his son. It is now the Claude Monet Foundation.

Birthplace of Impressionism the Seine still carries much of the supplies for Paris and Rouen.
The gardens and house have been restored and now appear as they would have done in Monet's lifetime. The house is pink with pale green shutters with the restored gardens to the front. The interior of the house displays many examples of Japanese art that Monet collected. The Kitchen and Dining Room is bright and cheerful with bright yellow tiles and furniture respectively. Next door to the house is the large studio Monet built to paint the Nympheas, which are now displayed in the Orangerie in Paris. The studio is home to the Monet Foundation's shop.
The gardens are exquisite in Summer with arches of colourful, wonderfully scented flowers. Take the small foot tunnel under the road and you will arrive in the world renowned Water Garden. This was created by the artist by diverting the River Epte. Here you will find the subjects of numerous Monet Impressionist paintings, such as water lilies and restored Japanese bridges. The water garden attracts many modern day artists who produce their own interpretations of the the atrist's themes.

Water GardenGiverny is also home to the American Art Museum (Musée d'art Americain). The museum is dedicated to the American artists who came to France to become Impressionist painters. Works by John Singer Sargent, Wimslow Homer and Mary Cassatt are on display.

Vernon is the closest town on the River Seine to Giverny. Vernon is home to the A.G. Poulain Museum which is housed in a mansion dating from the 15C. The museum is home to Impressionist and animal paintings (this is a speciality of this museum). It also has displays of local history from the Neolithic period to World War 2.
