Monarch drops Newquay > Malaga

Monarch Airlines are to wind up their service from Newquay to Malaga on 30 April 2006. The airline cites the 5 GBP charge levied on passengers departing Newquay Airport by Cornwall County Council as the reason. When they announced the route in July 2005, Monarch were not aware that the charge was planned. Ryanair had earlier disbanded its Newquay to London Stansted route for the same reason. Airport charges is one of the biggest factors in low cost carriers' decision making process when deciding where to introduce more routes.

Ryanair flights struck by lightning

In one of today's news items from Ryanair, they report delays yesterday (Sunday 19 February 2006)on some of their flights from Santander in Northern Spain. It appears that no less than four Ryanair aircraft were struck by lightning as they approached Santander. Three aircraft landed normally and one diverted to Valladolid.

The aircraft were all thoroughly checked and two received repairs before resuming service. They apolgised for the delays to passengers emphasising that safety of passengers and aircraft is their No1 priority.

What amazes me is that four Ryanair aircraft should be struck by lightning on the same day. Is this a common occurrence when flying?

SN Brussels gets atomium power

SN Brussels Airlines , the phoenix that appeared out of Sabena's ashes is celebrating the reopening of a world famous Brussels landmark by placing a picture of the structure on the side of one of its Avro RJ100 aircraft. The atomium was getting a facelift last Summer. When I was there cleaners on ropes were restoring its mirror surfaces. The atomium reopens to the public on Saturday 18 February 2006.
SN Brussels is promoting both Brussels as a place worthy of a visit but of themselves as an airline to get you there.

Ryanair sale ends tomorrow

Ryanair's latest offering is, 2 million seats from 15.99 GBP one way. Well that is what they claim, but some flights are cheaper than that. Taxes and charges at Dublin are less than Liverpool making the cheapest return flights 25.18 GBP.

The offer is applicable to flight made betweem 24 February 2006 and 30 June 2006. There are however a number of blackout periods at school and public holidays and major sporting events etc.

If you would like some of these cheap flights then you'd better get your skates on, as the offer ends close of play on Monday 13 February 2006.

Centralwings waives airport fees

Centralwings' latest newsletter dropped into my Inbox on Thursday, but publishing this then would mean it would end up in the archives before it could be acted upon.
For the whole of next week (Monday 13 February 2006 to Sunday 19 February 2006), Centralwings will not apply any additional passenger fees to the seat prices quoted on its website for flights to be taken between 22 February 2006 and 6 April 2006. In this period a lot of the new Summer flights will start operating including the Leeds Bradford to Warsaw route. This should mean a halving of the cost of flying this route on its inaugural day from 37.78 GBP to 19.89 GBP.
Guess we find out tomorrow.

Steve Fossett bags another record

Steve Fossett has broken the record for the longest non stop flight in aviation history covering 26,389.3 miles since leaving Florida on Wednesday. He flew the Virgin Atlantic sponsored GlobalFlyer solo for 76 hours 45 minutes. He experienced a serious electrical failure causing him to make an emergency landing at Bournemouth Airport. I didn't realise that Bournemouth was on Virgin route network.
Steve Fosset was the first man to fly around the world single handed and holds over 100 different records from sports to flying.

Pilot arrested at Manchester

The BBC has been broadcasting a story regarding an American Airways flight bound for Chicago being delayed as a pilot was arrested on suspicion of being drunk. I would have thought a breathalyser would give a strong indication but I suppose a blood or urine test must be used to confirm the analysis.
The 45 year old pilot from Ohio was arrested this morning as he reported for duty.

C4 and Ryanair clash over TV Documentary

Ryanair has published the correspondence passed between the Channel 4 production team for the Dispatches programme and Ryanair, on the homepage of their website. The correspondence can be found on the homepage by clicking on the link entitled "Ryanair and Dispatches - The Truth" bar found near the centre top of the page.

The Dispatches programme due to go out on Monday 13 February 2006, has been filmed using two undercover reporters who were trained and worked as cabin crew for Ryanair. A number of allegations are made regarding the safety of Ryanair operations. These were refuted by Ryanair but Channel 4 were standing by their claims on Friday 10 February 2006.

Ryanair and Steve Boulton Productions for C4 have been sending copies of their correspondence to the CAA and IAA as the allegations relate to safety, Ryanair claim to have informed the regulators as soon as they received the allegations.

Looking at the correspondence it looks like this story has some way to go yet.

I don't think I will comment on this. I have my own views, but I'll keep them to myself. It is up to the CAA and IAA to decide if Ryanair is operating safely.

The programme goes out at 20h00 UK time on Monday. I'm sure there will be more information appearing on the web soon.

Thank you Sir Freddie

My first flight on a passenger aircraft was on a Skytrain to Toronto in 1979. My course at University entailed a number of field courses to mining projects. Normally this would be to the South Wales Coalfield in Year 1, somewhere in the UK in Year 2 and an overseas trip in the final year. In the past this had meant trips to Spain or Poland. When we reached Year 3 a Sir Freddie Laker’s Skytrain enabled our field trip destination to be the mines in Ontario, Canada. I have very fond memories of the flight, the extremely friendly cabin crew, the in-flight movies and a passenger wondering why everyone on board seemed to know each other.

From then on, whenever Sir Freddie or Laker Airlines got a mention on the TV, radio or newspapers, I would stop what I was doing and take notice. The story that enfolded over the early eighties used to make me sad and angry. I observed airlines with monopolies and restrictive practices ganging up on a man whose main goal was to make cheap flights available to everyone. It was a sad day when the Skytrain was eventually put out of business by the bully tactics of the established trans-Atlantic carriers.

His no frills model and selling cheap flights made him the founding father of the budget airlines we see today. Sir Richard Branson was one of the first to give Sir Freddie the recognition he deserves, telling the world that Virgin Airlines would not be here if it wasn’t for his role model.
It was the battles started by Sir Freddie Laker that led to the de-regulation of the airline business which enabled the current low cost airlines to thrive in the way they do today.

The current market of healthy competition between low cost operators makes this time unique in airline history. The best times will be over if predictions of the impeding demise of the bulk of the budget airlines is realised. If all we do is swap the big airline players for ones with the same power to threaten competition, then we will not have progressed.

If we learnt one thing from Sir Freddie, it must be that all airlines must compete equally and not be able to use their size and connections to the detriment of their competitors.
I was moved by the tributes on the BBC News Site. There are very few people in the airline industry that would generate such a warm tributes.

Thank you Sir Freddie, for realising the dreams of millions of travellers.

Kent Airport reopens for business

Following the collapse of EUJet last year, Kent International Airport (KIA) is to reopen for passenger services. The airport's new owners, Infratil Airports Europe have released a press statement stating that Kent Escapes part of the Seguro Travel Group will fly to Faro, Portugal and Barcelona, Spain every Thursday between 25 May 2006 and 26 October 2006. Charter flights operated by Newmarket Holidays will also fly during the Summer to Italian destinations such as Lake Garda and Lido Di Jesolo.

In my view the airport will have its work cut out to attract a passengers from outside Kent. London passengers already have at least five airports with budget airlines operating from them. Furthermore they all have good rail or tube links. It is possible that part of the reason for EUJet's failure stemmed from persuading potential passengers that flying from Kent International was as good an option as Stansted or Luton. On the plus side Infratil Airports Europe operates Glasgow Prestwick Airport so have the expertise to develop KIA just as successfully.

EasyJet offer Gatwick all night check in

EasyJet will offer allow passengers to check in, both their luggage and themselves from 22h00 onwards for flights departing up to 08h30. The service started yesterday. Passengers wishing to use the service will use zone 'A' in the South Terminal. Upon arrival at the airport they can then proceed to the departure gate with their boarding pass issued at check in. They must report 30 minutes prior to departure as per EasyJet standard conditions of travel.

I am not sure how attractive a proposition this is. I guess it will save queuing early in the morning, but the best option is to travel with carry on luggage only. It saves time and aggravation at both ends of the journey if no checked in luggage is carried.

Some of the flights do not start or terminate in France such as flights to Barcelona. Other airlines likely to be affected include Ryanair, flybe and Jet2.com.
