Aviation and the environment - the debate continues
Today's Observer continues the debate on the environmental impact of cheap flights and the expansion in the aviation industry. The article discusses the likely contribution to climate change that increased flights will have. Again the emphasis is on climate change and not the closer peak oil production. The article relates that a number of influential figures including Mark Ellingham, founder of Rough Guides, one of the leading travel guidebook publishers has vowed to reduce his flying and to publish warnings regarding the damage caused by flights in his travel guides.
The positive side of this story is that the people who have given up flying are still travelling and enjoying the experience even more than before. Journeys take longer but the experience is an adventure in itself and you get to get a feel for the distances between your home and your travel destination.
One thing is for certain, this debate isn't going to go away.

Cheap flights and the environment
In today's Independent two pages and a third of the comment section is devoted to explaining how cheap flights could potentially prevent the United kingdom meeting its commitment to reducing greenhouse gas emissions. A number of surveys have indicated that overseas travel is growing between five and six percent per year. At present trends, the Commons Environmental Audit Committee believes that aviation will be producing 43 million tonnes of carbon in carbon dioxide in 2050. The article and comment then discusses the implications of the expansion in overseas travel, fuelled by cheap flights. It concentrates on climate change and carbon dioxide emissions but strangely doesn't mention that air travel will be unable to grow at present trends until 2050.
We will reach a point at which oil production will peak and then fall off long before that. Of course oil will be with us for a good number of years yet, but not in ever increasing supply like it has up to now. Once demand for oil exceeds its supply, there can only be one result in a market economy. Plain and simple it will be a rapid escalation in the price of oil, unlike anything we have seen up to now. Of course oil crises have come and gone but they occurred due to wars, and disasters like Hurricane Katrina. These were transient, but still caused the price of crude oil to quadruple in some of the cases. Just imagine what will happen when the under supply is due to exhaustion of reserves and not a temporary blip. Even the proposed application of tax to aviation fuel will be slight in comparison to the price escalation due to dwindling oil reserves.
At this stage even Ryanair will have to factor in the price of oil into its fares. Air travel from that point on, will return to the pattern around before the advent of the budget airlines. It will be costly. The only cheap flights will be on high capacity charter flights the Airbus A380 fitted with 800 seats may well come into its own on the long haul routes and the high speed train network will become more popular on shorter European routes. The stag party in Prague will be too costly to contemplate for the majority of the United Kingdom, unless of course Eurostar and Germany's ICE train run an special offer.
Climate change is a serious problem facing our planet but the depletion of oil reserves will affect us well before we the predicted temperature changes start to be felt. In any event action to prevent damage is the same. Consume less energy from unsustainable sources. The Independent article has 10 tips to lessen the impact of travel. They include not travelling First or Business Class, meaning travel on aircraft with high load factors. Pay to offset your carbon emissions with organisations such as www.climatecare.org. Using the train for shorter trips as it is up to 8 times less polluting than air travel per passenger. More...
My advice for what it is worth, is to think carefully before flying off to a destination just because it is cheaper than the taxi home from a night on the town. The faster the oil is used up, the sooner the oil price will spiral upwards.

Install WiFi across flybe lounges including Jersey, Guernsey, Belfast, Southampton and Gatwick.

Ryanair changes rules on baggage
Ryanair have indicated they would like to reduce the amount of hold baggage for some time now. They even hinted they would charge for handlingand stowing checked in baggage. Flybe beat them to it when they introduced a discount for passengers with only carry on luggage and charged economy travellers for checking bags into the hold. Ryanair have now announced their own scheme, which they will implement from 16 March 2006.
In it passengers with only compliant carry on bags (must not weigh more than 10kg and be less than 55cm x 40cm x 20cm, in dimensions), will get a discount of £2.50 (€3.50 euros). In addition these passengers will be given priority boarding. Passengers with hold baggage will get an increased allowance of 20 kilograms, up from the present 15 kilograms. However they will need to pay £2.50 (€3.50 euros) per bag if booked in advance via the Ryanair website. This fee rises to £5.00 (€7.00 euros) if not pre booked, prior to turning up at the airport. Effectively this means that these passengers will not experience a rise in fares uless they fail to pre book their luggage or travel with more than one item. In fact they get an increased allowance for no extra cost compared to the present time.
The effect will be to reduce air fares and the time spent at the airports for passengers with only carry on hand luggage. The remaining 75% of passengers with hold luggage will pay more than them and spend more time at the airports.
Up until now 25% of Ryanair passengers don't check in baggage to the hold when travelling. The airline's view is that these passengers subsidise those with checked in baggage. The changes will redress the balance.
The scheme will reduce the airline's operating costs by reducing the need for staff to check in luggage, making electronic check in a practical proposition. It should also encourage the carrying of less luggage making aircraft lighter and thus more fuel efficient.
I feel it should stimulate some imaginative ideas for travelling with a bag less than 55cm x 40cm x 20cm, weighing less than 10 kilograms.

Bergen route for Newcastle
Jet2.com have today added Bergen to its Newcastle routes. It will bring the number of destinations offered by Jet2.com from Newcastle Airport to six. What I find a little strange is that Bergen was already connected to Newcastle by ferry. Of course the ferry takes 26 hours to get there but also provides a cruise along some of Norway's most spectacular coastline in with that journey. Bergen is obviously a destination worthy of a visit on its own and the £19.99 inclusive one way fare will attract plenty of passengers. The service starts 28 April 2006.
Now if anyone from Jet2.com is reading this, how about some flights from Manchester?

Ryanair 10p "Mad March" seats
Ryanair the Irish low budget airline which also happens to be Europe's largest is having another sale starting tomorrow (20 January 2006 and running until midnight on Thursday 26 January 2006). It will sell a million seats on 300 of its routes for 10 pence plus taxes and charges. airline, today (19th Jan) announced a mad March seat on sale on its 300 routes. The travel period is in February and March. Although not yet announced, I would expect the usual blackout periods of festivals, sports events, school and public holidays will apply.

“You’d be mad to miss our special offers in Ryanair’s sale. With flights for ski destinations, city breaks and spa breaks going for as little as 10 pence, Ryanair has something to suit everyone looking for a getaway in the coming months. SN Brussels lowers prices
Tickets will now start at €66 euros inclusive, one way and €125 euros inclusive, return. I personally am very pleased to find that the Manchester to Brussels route is available. The airline has abolished paper tickets and reduced the costs of its airport services. At Brussels it even offers self check in facilities, which save the airline money and the passengers time.
Thomsonfly 200,000 free flights
Thomsonfly, TUI's budget airline, the third largest in the United Kingdom is offering 200, 000 seats for free. The only fees are the airport taxes and charges. There are ample routes available from Coventry, Doncaster / Sheffield and even London Gatwick to destinations such as Salzburg, Paris, Barcelona, Amsterdam, Jersey, Lyon, Ibiza, Alicante, Malaga and Palma. I am saddened to find that there are no flights on offer from Manchester though. Never mind the deal is still a good one and if there are tickets from your local airport, then it is well worth looking a little closer. The offer ends on 24 January 2006.

BAA gets deal to save Gatwick Express
BAA yesterday announced that it had secured a deal to save the Gatwick Express, airport to London rail service. In partnership with National Express Group the operators of the rail franchise for the route, BAA had submitted proposals to the Strategic Rail Authority which is asessing the Utilisation of the London to Brighton rail route of which the Gatwick to London route is a part.
A compromise was proposed where rail and air passengers share the trains while keeping the express elements of the service alive. The Gatwick Express service has regularly been voted the UK's favourite train service.
Paul Griffiths, Managing Director of Gatwick Airport said: “We believe our joint proposal shows that the differing needs of the commuter and the air traveller can be reconciled. The existence of this compromise plan should enable the Department for Transport to reach a speedy conclusion to the Route Utilisation Strategy, and give air passengers, commuters and airlines confidence in the future of the rail services in which they all rely.”
