Monarch Airlines are to wind up their service from Newquay to Malaga on 30 April 2006. The airline cites the 5 GBP charge levied on passengers departing Newquay Airport by Cornwall County Council as the reason. When they announced the route in July 2005, Monarch were not aware that the charge was planned. Ryanair had earlier disbanded its Newquay to London Stansted route for the same reason. Airport charges is one of the biggest factors in low cost carriers' decision making process when deciding where to introduce more routes.
