Ryanair and hold baggage

In an article in the Sunday Times, Michael O'Leary, CEO of Ryanair has said that it is "inevitable" that Ryanair will charge for hold baggage in the future. It just seems to be a matter of when. He seems to have been caught on the hop by flybe who introduced a charge for hold stowed luggage on Friday. Mr O' Leary has tried to discourage the carrying of hold baggage by being very strict with weights of checked in bags. He has indicated for some time that he would like to get rid of it all together. Charging a supplement for it will hasten its demise.
The likelihood is that the checked in baggage charge will be levied at the same time as the trials for the new web check-in scheme. In this passengers will print off a bar code that will be scanned by machines at the airport. This is similar to the Eurostar system. O’Leary said the machines will cost Ryanair about €5,000 per airport, but will save time and staff.
