Easter 2006 Ferry price comparison (short channel routes)

Here are the results of our price Survey of short Cross Channel routes, carried out on 21 January 2006. Prices have fallen even further, since the last time we carried out this exercise. In 2004 the cheapest return fares were £99! Furthermore the booking sites are now a lot more user friendly making data input so much easier. Very few ask for spurious information like vehicle registration numbers and dates are generally a lot easier to enter.
Pricing structures similar to the budget airlines have been adopted by many ferry companies. It was good to see that a lot of the booking sites gave a list of various times and applicable fares to enable passengers to trade off convenience against cost, if they so wished. Worthy of mention here were the Eurotunnel, Norfolk Line and P&O Ferries sites. Ferrysaversand Leisure Direction also offer this as a matter of course.
aferry.to have now introduced the facilty to compare prices for the same crossing times. Finding the cheapest fares could only be achieved by trying different sailing times so no marks there for user friendliness.
Hoverspeed is no longer in the market having stopped operating in November last year. P&O is also subject to takeover bids at present.

Results
Norfolk Line came up with the cheapest fare(£58), if passengers don't mind travelling out of peak hours. This was also available via Ferrysavers giving the opportunity to weigh up alternative routes and operators. The best deal for our preffered sailings times of 8 to 9am on the outward crossing and 4 to 5pm on the return crossing was provided by SeaFrance with their £70 return fare. This was also available from Ferrysavers and Leisure Direction.
