"The best time to buy a ferry ticket is probably between October and February "

There are numerous ferry routes throughout Europe, ranging from Dover - Calais and other cross Channel routes to Marseille - North Africa and the Scandanavian routes. Being Welsh, I shall concentrate on the Ferry routes to and from the UK.
Since the abolition of Duty Free Sales in 2000, the prices charged have risen but still represent good value when comparisons are made to the period prior to the opening of the Channel Tunnel.
Getting a good ferry deal
The best time to buy a ferry ticket is probably between October and February. During this time deals for the following year abound. Good deals can be found throughout the year especially by using the Internet. Ferrysavers and IntoFrance are two organisations offering a service where they will locate the cheapest fare for your journey on a given route and date.
Ferrysavers in particular make the claim - "We will not be beaten on price". If you find a cheap crossing Ferrysavers will match it if they don't already undercut it. Phone 08704 42 42 43 & Quote "JWE" or Eurapart for the best deals.
Aferry.to offer tickets on routes all over Europe. Aferry.to offers real time booking, so if you book on the internet you will know immediately that you have booked a crossing.
Frequent Travellers
Most cross channel operators give incentives for frequent travellers. These are schemes similar to "Air Miles" where points are amassed and can be used to obtain a free ticket. Brittany Ferries also offers discounted fares for persons with property in France or Spain.
