Dunkerque - Dunkirk Dunkerque is not particularly inviting at first glance. Its heavy industries such as steel and chemicals are off putting, even the landscape comprises uninspiring sand dunes. The town does, however, have enough history and attractions to make a stay worthwhile. A port since 800, Dunkirk has been ruled by France, Spain, England and Holland before Louis XIV returned it to France in 1662. The Office du Tourisme in the Town Centre is located close to La Tour du Beffroi (1440). ![]() The Museé Portuaire is housed in an old (1850) tobacco warehouse. Within, you will find exhibits illustrating the life of the port both past and present. Outside a number of boats complete the collection including a fine the three masted sailing ship shown. The Museé des Beaux-Arts has a good collection of Flemish, Italian, French paintings and sculptures. There is also a gallery illustrating local history. The admission price also covers the Museé d'Art Contemporain. The last week of May should see a large number of Veterans returning to the town for the Sixtieth Anniversary of the Dunkirk evacuation.
