"Before
you lies a giant chess game with squares of green maize and golden
wheat, ornate belltower playing pieces pierce the skyline. Your move!" Douai Douai was an important centre for the Pas de Calais Coalfield. The coal mines raised their last coal in 1990 and the town has now emphasised its tourist friendly face. The Belfry at Douai is famous for having appeared in a painting by Corot which is now displayed at the Louvre and for being described by Victor Hugo. The tower grabs your attention as soon as you see it or hear the 62 bells within play a tune every quarter of an hour. The Town Hall (Hôtel de Ville) is open to the visitors and has a fine 15C Gothic Council Chamber. Douai's main museum is the Musée de la Chartreuse which is made up of Fine Art and Archeological / Natural History sections. The Art section has works by Flemish painters such as Rubens and Jordaens. There are also paintings by Impressionists including Renoir, Sisley and Pissaro. The Archaeology and Natural History section includes exhibits found in the Region and dating from 250 000 BC when man's ancestors first inhabited these parts. Gallo Roman History is also on show with exhibits from Bruay and Lewarde. To learn more about Douai's mining heritage visit the museum at Centre Historique Minier de Lewarde. Food and fuel
