Cambrai
Although badly damaged in both World Wars Cambrai retains many noteworthy buldings. Built out of local limestone, the old buildings have a clean white appearance. The town walls have gone but there is plenty of evidence of their former grandeur. Take a look at the Porte de Paris for example and you'll see what I mean. Go though the Porte de Paris towards the town centre and the Cathédral Notre-Dame with its tall Belfry will come up on your right. The cathedral was built in the 18C but has been modified frquently since. It houses Fénelon's (the swan of Cambrai) tomb. Opposite is the Office de Tourisme housed in the picturesque Maison Espagnole. The centre of the town is the place Astrid-Briandt with the imposing Hôtel de Ville. To the West of the town cente is Saint-Géry church which displays the Ruben's masterpiece the "Entombment". Cambrai was the setting for the first major tank battle in history, when 400 British tanks set off at dawn on November 20, 1917 for the Hindenburg Line. It was the first time they had been used in a large concentation and on ground that had not been pounded into an unpassable quagmire. Food and fuel Cambrai is renowned for renowned andouillettes (tripe sausages), which have now run into trouble following the introduction of BSE controls. Bêtises de Cambrai - mint flavoured sweets are not affected and are well worth sampling. Cambrai has both an Auchan and a Cora Hypermarket.
