Typical apartments

Self catering apartments are available throughout Europe, comprising sleeping, living and cooking accommodation. Many are located in villages or complexes incorporating facilities such as swimming pools, tennis courts or even golf courses. There are a number of apartment chains with a European prescence. Pierre et Vacances, Maeva, Center Parcs and Odalys being some examples. France has an organisation the Syndicat Des Résidences de Tourisme (SNRT) that grades apartments and publishes them in a brochure.

Major chains
France is particularly well served with apartment groups. Pierre et Vacances, Maeva and Orion have apartments serving business personnel as well as vacationers. Citadines apartment hotels are found exclusively in cities. Other major French apartment groups include Odalys , Residences MGM and Lagrange. Center Parcs can be found in the UK, France, Germany and Holland. Belgium has Sunparks. In addition to the large chains there are smaller apartment chains, such as those graded by SNRT in France as well as apartment hotels such as those provided by Treff Hotels in Germany.

Staying in an apartment can prove to be very cost effective for families on a budget. The really cheap apartments are to be found in skiing resorts in Summertime. These offer lots of activities from tennis to swimming to climming at very competitive prices. A number of European Travel Companies offer apartment vacations at discounted prices. These range from Carrefour Hypermarkets to Travel companies such as the Degriftour. Degriftour who offer late bookings at up to 50% off the brochure price, have now been taken over by Lastminute.com. My family stayed at an SNRT affiliated Residence last Easter. It was booked with Degriftour saving well over a third off the standard rate.

Apartment chain locations

Apartments are located mainly at vacation destinations such as the Coast of Europe. Apartments can be found on the Spanish Costas, the Mediteranean Coast, Atlantic Coast and the Channel Coast of France. Other destinations include the Alps, Ireland, Denmark and Italy. Major Cities as well as inland locations ranging from the Ardeche through to the Vosges Mountains. Center Parcs and Sun Parks tend to be all weather village type complexes usually featuring indoor water sporting facilities.

Winter sports breaks are more usually served by apartment chains and chalets although some do have hotels.

Facilities
Predictable quality standards are a hallmark of the major apartment chains. In addition Tourist Boards also grade Self Catering apartments from the Wales Tourist Board "ticks" to the SNRT "stars" ratings. The major chains also have similar apartment layouts. This can be a distinct advantage over "Gite" type accommodation. This does not mean however that houses are not provided, as many of the big players also have houses available in their vacation villages.
