Chamonix - Mont Blanc is located in South East France at the foot of Mont  Blanc, the highest mountain in the Alps.  Originally an Alpine village it grew into a town following the first successful ascent of Mont Blanc in 1797.
It was also host to the first Winter Olympic Games in 1926. It is a world renowned location for ski -ing and snowboarding. It has some of the best terrain for off piste  skiing / snowboarding in the world. The famed vallée Blanche starts at the Aiguille du Midi at 3842m and goes for 20 km, it is unpisted, unpatrolled  so you only go if your are competent in off piste riding and  have avalanche awarenesss, transceiver, probe, shovel, harness and rope for crevasses and a guide.


Environment

Chamonix  takes it environmental responsibilities seriously. Its Tourist Office holds ISO 14001 certification. To encourage the use of public transport  visitors are given cards allowing them free transport  on buses and trains in the valley..

Pistes / Lifts

Chamonix is not a ski in ski out resort.It has 4 main ski areas. Brevent, Flegere, Grand Montets andLes Grands Montets, Chamonix Le Tour  (also know as Balme).  Les Houches is also accessible by the free ski buses. It is included on the Chamonix Unlimited Lift Pass along with Courmayer in Italy.

Accommodation

Chamonix has ample accomodation with everything from campsites (in Summer), hotels, apartments and chalets.
