Late booking deals

Booking in advance does get some very cheap deals especially with rail, air and ferry operators, the Travelodge Hotel chain and apartment chains. All very well, but what if you can't book well in advance?
One way of getting a good deal on a travel package is to book at the last minute. Usually this means leaving booking until a fortnight before your departure. Although you may not be able to get your exact choice of destination the number of offers available is surprising. Hotel rooms, apartments, flights and packages can all be found at a substantial discount if still unsold 1 to 2 weeks prior to departure.
A number of Internet based companies have sprung up to cater for this market. The most famous of theses in the UK being Lastminute.com.
For hotels  LateRooms is a site that specialises in hotels and can offer rooms at up to 70% off the usual rate for late bookings. I have used them on a number of occasions and got some luxury hotel stays at budget prices.
Apartment chains also offer late bookings, look up their web sites for their late booking offers. An option I would recommend is Interhome who reduce the price of their apartment weeks by 30% is unsold 7 days before the proposed stay.
